The Liquorice Dress

Liquorice is very much a divider amongst candy lovers.
You either love it or hate it.
Unfortunately I fall into the would-rather-die-than-eat-it category...
I've always been more of a jelly baby kinda gal.

That was until I stumbled upon the fabulous patterns over at Deer & Doe

Compulsive doesn't quite come close enough to describe my online shopping habits.
It only took about 3.8 seconds to add 3 of their wonderful patterns into my cart, checkout with paypal and set up camp by the mailbox. The patterns arrived all the way from France most quickly. merci beaucoup.

First cab off the rank was the Reglisse Dress.
a quick Google search revealed that Reglisse translates as liquorice!

Since this is the first time sewing with Deer & Doe, I wanted to use a fabric that I wouldn't miss too much if it didn't fit.

(Sidenote: I am wayyyyy too lazy to make muslins/toiles so if I am unsure of a new pattern I just pick a size that sounds right based on body measurements/finished measurements and sew it up in whatever fabric is lying around. If it doesn't fit, it goes to a friend! This system has worked so far...)

So I went stash fishing and caught some black swiss dot cotton voile. I have about 10 metres of this lovely stuff. It was perfect for this little number even though a bit out of season again... this is another bad habit. This was a really quick dress to sew!
Nothing too fussy. I zipped everything through the overlocker and finished with a rolled hem and voila! done.

I wasn't overly excited about the elastic waistband (brings back memories of primary school art smocks...) however it actually looks just fine. ALSO you can eat a big dinner in this frock! Go on, have that extra dessert.

I was most pleased once this was made up and pranced around the house in the twirly skirt.
The only changes for next time would be to lengthen the skirt... Its a little short for my granny wearing taste. Would also love to try a striped version like the pattern pics, Hello sailor!

Fabric: Swiss dot cotton
Other bits: 1" elastic

Til next time, Adios!
xx

Ps. Stay tuned for a 100 post giveaway, we are almost there!

  2. Ooooh I love it! I wasn't sold on Reglisse in a powdery pink. I thought it was a bit overly girly. But this is a nice sophisticated bolder version! x

  3. I have just discovered your blog and based on this post, I think we might be sewing twins!!! Compulsively buying 3 D&D patterns, skipping muslins and giving it away if it doesn't fit, loving the "eat more dessert" enabling of the elastic waistband - hahaha :) Love this in black - tres chic!

  5. Beautiful!! I just got this pattern by accident (it was in Pavot's envelope due to some pattern completing mix-up, I guess) and planned to give it away on my blog. But your awesome version makes me think I should try it, first!!

  8. What a gorgeous pattern! Deer & Doe make some fabulous patterns. I love this is a simple black. It's so lovely. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only sewer too lazy to make a muslin. I always wing it and just hope for the best!

  9. Delish!! I do love me a bit of licorice, alas, since being diagnosed a glutard it is no longer for me. But seriously, this is sweet! Love the swiss dot and by golly goodness you look good in black. You're melburnian, right? hehe :)

    1. Glutard...I just snorted out loud, too funny! My husband isn't allowed to eat the stuff within a 20 mt radius due to the stench...
Us melbournites and black... It always wins right?
